New Farmington school gets a new name

Farmington’s new school is no longer just Farmington’s New School.

Now, it’s Gateway Academy.

The name was chosen from among four finalists in a poll of district residents and employees. School board members approved it as part of their consent agenda Monday.

The other finalists were Rambling River Academy, Farmington Sparks Academy and either Academy of Personalized Learning and Educational Excellence (APEX) or Academy of Personalized Learning and Community Service (APECS).

The finalists were chosen from a list generated by the families of students who will attend the school in the fall, as well as by teachers and other district employees associated with the facility. The idea, said district innovative programming director Laura Pierce, was to find a name that reflected the mission of the new school, which is focused on individualized, project-based learning and a connection to the community.

Pierce said the district received more than 350 votes in its poll, and Gateway Academy had strong support.

“We did have a lot of support as well for Rambling River Academy,” she said.

Gateway Academy was the name that got the most support from board members at their June 9 meeting. But board members ultimately decided the name should be selected by larger group. The district sent an email to district residents last week.

Pierce said it’s nice to be able to call the new school something other than, “new school.”

“Everybody this morning at meetings around the district, we’re catching ourselves. But we have quickly established that we’re Gateway Academy,” she said.
