County renews deal with Regina for medical examiner services

As it has for years, Dakota County will continue to contract with Regina Medical Center in Hastings for morgue and medical examiner support services.

At its regular meeting this week, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners agreed to execute its contract with Regina Medical Center for 2012

The county's share of the fixed costs is expected to be $395,121, a .58 percent increase from 2011.

Dakota, Carver, Chisago, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Houston and Scott counties provide a cooperative purchase of morgue and medical examiner support services from Regina Medical Center. The proposed 2012 contract is being reviewed by each county board.

The total 2012 budget request for the morgue services for the seven counties is expected to be about $790,000.With slightly more than 50 percent of the population in the seven counties, Dakota County's share is about half that amount.

The regional medical examiner's office has handled 2,158 cases this year as of earlier this month. It expects to handle about the same number in 2012.

The commissioners also agreed to a contract extension for Dakota County medical examiner Dr. Lindsey Thomas. Her four-year term will expire Dec. 31, 2015. She previously was appointed to a four-year term in 2007.
