New SUV arrives for fire chief

It’s not nearly as much fun to ride in an SUV as it is a fire truck, but Farmington fire marshal John Powers is still pretty happy with the department’s newest vehicle.

A new 2014 Chevy Tahoe chief’s vehicle officially went into service for the fire department on Dec. 2, replacing the 2002 Ford Expedition that had been in service for more than a decade.

“They got that around the same time I started working for the city,” Powers said. “It’s been around as long as I have.”

The city received the new white SUV a couple of weeks ago, but had to have it customized before it could go into service. That process meant having the fire department’s logo placed on the doors and loading the interior with all of the things Powers, fire chief Tim Pietsch and the fire department’s assistant chiefs would need at a scene.

The truck carries turnout gear, medical equipment, a defibrillator and fire investigations tools for Powers. It also has tools necessary for setting up an incident command point at a fire scene.

This is the second vehicle acquired by the fire department in 2013. The first, a fire/rescue engine, went into service last February. By 2016, six more new vehicles will be added to the fire department.

“We’re looking to add a couple more over the next few years,” Powers said.

The new chief’s vehicle was used on a call on its first day of service, Powers added.
