Churches will team up for July 4 outdoor service

Two Farmington churches will come together under the summer sun on Sunday morning. One will stick around outside for the rest of the summer.

Light of the World Lutheran Church pastor Deb Stehlin said the idea to join Farmington Lutheran Church for a Fourth of July grew out of casual conversation between two pastors.

"We just threw it out as an idea," Stehlin said. "We were just talking, wouldn't it be fun to do an outdoor worship together as a community on a day we're celebrating community?"

Stehlin said she liked the idea of bringing the two churches' members and traditions together for at least one morning. And besides, she said, there are worse places to be on a summer morning than on the wooded grounds of Farmington Lutheran Church.

"Have you seen their back yard?" she said. "It's not a bad place to worship."

The 9:30 a.m. service is not just for members of Farmington Lutheran and Light of the World. Stehlin invited the entire community to attend.

For Farmington Lutheran, this week's outdoor service is the first of several on the schedule. The church will hold outdoor services ever Sunday in July and on the first Sunday in August. There will be an abbreviated traditional ceremony inside at 8:30 on Sundays and a contemporary service outdoors afterward.

Farmington Lutheran held outdoor services on the property before it had built its current church, but they have not been a regular event.

"It's a nice change," communications coordinator Diane Schmidtke said.
