After the U.S. Navy he returned home to earn his high school diploma. Then while attending college at Winona State University he joined the Army National Guard and was called to active duty in 1950 to serve in the Korean War.

After his military duty, he graduated from Winona State in 1951 with a Bachelor's degree in Education. In 1959 he earned a Master's degree in School Administration from North Dakota State University.

In 1953, Bob married his dream girl, Shirley Laabs, in Winona, Minn.
