Herbie was born June 26, 1942 in Farmington, MN to Herbert & Madonna Swedin. He attended Farmington public schools and married Rosemary (Gibbs) Swedin in 1960. They had two daughters, Nannette and Natalie. He attended Winona State College, worked at Frederick Willys in Farmington and then at Brockway Glass Corporation in Rosemount for 23 years. He served on the Farmington Fire Department in the 1970's and also coached the Farmington little league Vikings football team.
In the 1980's, Herbie transferred to Brockway Glass in Oakland, CA, for a short time. Upon returning to Minnesota, he began his second career as a custodian at Scott Highlands Middle School in Apple Valley, MN where he worked for 14 years. In 1996 he married Darlene Nelson from the Brainerd area. Herbie and Darlene spent their summers in Baxter and Longville, MN and winters in Harlingen, TX.
His greatest passion in life was sports. He enjoyed playing golf and watching football, NASCAR, baseball and basketball. He was also known to place a bet now and then on horse racing. He also enjoyed fishing and vacations in Ely, MN in his earlier years and at Woman Lake in Longville, MN later in life.
Special thanks to the Nelson family who helped make his life in the Brainerd area especially fun and interesting after his retirement. Herbie loved his daughters and loved being "Papa" to all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be missed very much!
