Student column: Getting ready for finals

First day of school: Two months ago. MEA break: Come and gone. Halloween: Over. First trimester of the school year: Three weeks left.

Why is it that time always flies by so fast? It seems like just yesterday I was getting ready for my first day of sophomore year. Now we are already almost one third of the way through the year. It’s crazy. But the end of a trimester usually means one thing to students: finals.

The most dreaded week of the trimester is quickly approaching, and there is no way for us to slow it down or stop it from happening. Finals always seem to sneak up on us. One day you are getting your seating assignment during the first week of the trimester and the next you are struggling to remember the lesson you learned the first week of school for the final exam.

While teachers prepare you for your final exams, it still can be stressful thinking about a test that covers everything you have learned so far this year. Not to mention that on finals day, you have a final exam in one class, followed by a final exam in another class, followed by another final exam in another class.

Talk about a tiring day.

Here are some tips on how to do your best during your finals exam. The first tip is to shed some of your extra commitments. Being a teenager, it is fun to be around your friends all the time. But for just one week, it might be beneficial to you if you tell your friend you are busy, and use that extra time to study for your exam.

While it is good to study on your own, it also helpful if you study with a friend or two. This might work for you if you don’t want to cancel your plans with your friend. Ask them if they would want to be your study buddy. This is beneficial because they might have something written down in their notes that you didn’t have written in yours. You could also help one another in a subject you want to have more knowledge of. If your friend is unavailable to do this, your parents or guardian might be able to do this as well.

One of the very best resources available to you during finals week is your teachers. Don’t be afraid to ask questions on a concept you don’t understand. Your teachers would most likely be more than happy to help you out. It is always better to ask questions than to keep your question to yourself and have to guess answers on your final exam.

Lastly, come the cliché tips. It is always a good idea to get a good night’s sleep and eat a good breakfast the morning of your test. If you’re nervous for your final exams, taking these steps might help decrease your anxiety and make you feel more confident on your test taking day.
