Swim and dive: Magalis wins dive at SSP

Diver Tyler Magalis broke 400 points for the first time and with his first-place finish was Farmington's top performer at Saturday's South St. Paul Packer Invitational.

Magalis earned a cumulative score of 402.15 in his dives, besting the next closest diver in the field of 12 competitors by over 80 points.

As a team, the Tigers finished fifth out of 11 teams with 133 points. Eau Claire won the meet handily, 379.5-178 over runner-up Hastings. St. Louis Park and River Falls finished ahead of Farmington and teams from Grand Rapids, Benilde St. Margaret's, Apollo, South St. Paul, St. Paul Como Park and Tartan rounded out the field.

Magalis also contributed to the Tigers' second best finish by swimming a leg of the third-place 200 freestyle relay. Brian Huls, Loren Hatten and Allen Berg also contributed to a time of 1 minute, 36.93 seconds.

Berg reached the top 10 in a pair of individual events. He was seventh in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:59.63 and fourth in the 500 freestyle in 5:23.25.

Magalis and Huls opened the meet by teaming up with Aaron Lane and Zach Holton for a fourth-place 1:50.68 clocking in the 200 medley relay.

Magalis, Berg, Matthew Stephan and Christopher Kirchmann closed out the meet by earning eighth in the 400 freestyle relay.

Stephan and Hatten finished eighth and ninth, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke where Huls earned fifth with a time of 1:09.43.

Earlier in the meet, Holton and Huls finished 8-9 in the 100 butterfly.

The Tigers compete again tonight in a Missota Conference dual meet against Northfield. Events get underway at 6 p.m. at Levi Dodge Middle School.
