Boys golf: Holmes hoping May gets company in 70s

Tommy May posted his best round of the young season in leading the Farmington boys golf team to 10th place at Monday's 13-team Tartan Invitational at Tartan Park.

May fired an 18-hole round of 77, backing up his 39 on the front nine with a 38 on the back nine. He finished 10th against a field of 84 golfers.

"Hopefully he can post another low score in our second conference tournament at Stonebrook (Tuesday)," Farmington coach Jon Holmes said. "I am guessing that it is just a matter of time before a couple other of our boys join him in the sub-80 realm."

On Monday Holmes had to settle for having his No. 2 golfer nine strokes behind May. Cooper Loew filled in that spot in the lineup with a round of 86, followed by Jake Hanson with an 87 and Mike Dalhed with a 90. The foursome's total of 340 strokes edged Cloquet (343) and South St. Paul (350) for the final spot in the top 10, but was well off the pace of first-place Mahtomedi's 306.

The Tiger varsity lineup was rounded out by Brandon Beers (90) and Matt Provost (93), giving the Tigers a total varsity team score of 523. Holmes said one area where his team could cut some of those strokes is on and around the putting green.

"It seems as if we are continuing to struggle with our short game especially putting. We will continue to work daily on these things and focus on making improvements as we go deeper into May," he said. "Hopefully we can get our players to get out and play in some competitive tournaments this summer to get them more used to pressure putting which is much different than going out and playing 18 with your buddies."

The Tigers were one stroke and one place better four days earlier at Wild's Golf Club in Prior Lake, where their team score of 339 earned ninth place out of 12 teams.

May, Dalhed and Provost led the way with matching rounds of 84 and Beers completed the top four with an 87.

Ryan Kelly added a 94 and Brady Akin scored a 99.

Orono won the meet, 306-312, over host Prior Lake.
