Babe Ruth baseball: Combines swept by Apple Valley

Farmington's Babe Ruth League baseball team will have to have a short memory if it wants to qualify for the upcoming state tournament in Eden Prairie.

The Combines were swept 12-2 and 9-8 against Apple Valley last Tuesday night in their final two games before tonight's playoffs get under way in Burnsville. Only the winner advances from the three-team, double-elimination bracket, which also features Apple Valley and Woodbury.

"Those are both teams we can play with as long as we can avoid the big innings that have haunted us so far this year," said Farmington coach Shane Ferrozzo. "If we can find ways to eliminate the teams' extra outs we can make a push for the state tournament."

The Combines jumped to an early 2-0 lead and were still within 4-2 in the sixth. However, Apple Valley quickly pulled away with two runs in the sixth and six more in the seventh.

Tony Ferrozzo and Matt Rudorfer accounted for both runs with a pair of RBI hits in the first inning, then Farmington was held hitless over the final six innings.

The Combines fell behind 7-3 in the nightcap before rallying to tie the score at eight apiece in the bottom of the sixth. Apple Valley completed the sweep with a run in the eighth inning.

Rudorfer, Taylr Bednar and Matt Schmeltzer started the scoring with three straight run-producing hits in the third. Kyle Winkelman helped chip away at Apple Valley's lead with an RBI double and another Bednar single tied the score at 8-8.
