Football: Grubb excels in Ironman

Senior Tyler Grubb was the winner of the annual Ironman competition on the first day of football practice Monday afternoon at Farmington High School.

Grubb outclassed 79 teammates with a score of 4,535 points in the eight-event competition, defeating runner-up CJ Record by just under 200 points. Sebren Baer finished third with 4,339 points, followed by John Schimmel with 4,125 points and Tommy Korbein with 4,001 points.

Grubb finished first in two events. He won the 40-yard dash with a time of 4.6 seconds and tied for first with Baer with 33 tire flips. Grubb also cleaned 233 pounds, back squatted 347 pounds, bench pressed 205 pounds, ran the L-Drill in 7.54 seconds and vertical jumped 28 inches.

Other event winners were Schimmel in the clean (272 pounds) and bench press (276 pounds), Korbein in the back squat (476 pounds), Alex Chadwick in the vertical jump (32.5 inches) and Dayne Eich in the L-Drill (7.42 seconds).

Rounding out the top 10 overall finishers were Jake Schaeppi (3,949), Chadwick (3,709), Darren Beenken (3,680), Elliott Carroll (3,617) and Drew Hegseth (3,607).

The previous five winners of the Ironman competition are Nick Albano (2009), Isaiah Rockett (2008), Derek Waldbillig (2007), Jordan Hauschild (2006) and Carson Jones (2005).

The Tigers put on their pads for the first time Tuesday in preparation for their season opener at home Friday, Sept. 3, against Hudson (Wis.).
