Girls cross country: Pacheco leads girls to 10th

Farmington freshman Maricia Pacheco runs toward the finish line at last Thursday's Section 1AA Championships in Owatonna.

Farmington finished behind Northfield at the recent Missota Conference Championships, but got its revenge by edging the Raiders for 10th place in the girls portion of the Section 1AA Championships.

The Tigers scored 249 team points to edge the Raiders by three. Lakeville North beat Lakeville South, 40-84, for the team title, then Big Nine Conference teams occupied the Nos. 3 through 7 spots before Red Wing came in eighth with 193 points.

The Tigers brought five runners in under 17 minutes for the first time this season, led by freshman Maricia Pacheco's season-best time of 15:46 on the 4,000-meter course at Owatonna. Pacheco placed 20th out of 97 runners.

Maria Kiminski moved into the team's No. 2 spot with a 49th-place time of 16:33, one spot ahead of teammate Bailey Opsal's 50th-place 16:34.

Eighth-graders Sofia Chadwick and Victoria Jacoby turned in the final two counting varsity scores with times of 16:50 and 16:59 that earned them 61st and 69th, respectively.

Marissa Stewart (74th, 17:19) and eighth-grader Morgan Medved (76th, 17:25) also competed for the Tigers.

"They have worked hard this season, every one of them has improved their personal times, and given the competition, they should be proud of themselves," girls coach Heidi Revels said.
