Swimming: Five events qualify for State

Farmington will have five swimmers and five alternates in uniform at Friday's Class 2A State Meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center. For the first time ever, the whole Farmington girls swimming and diving team got to compete at the True Team State Meet earlier this season.

Ten of the Tigers get to go back to the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center tomorrow afternoon.

Five events qualified for tonight's Class 2A State Meet during a string of strong performances -- including four school-record swims -- in the finals at Saturday's Section 1AA Championships at the Rochester Recreation Center.

The Tigers crowned three section champions as they moved up from fourth to second in the team standings on the meet's final day. Rochester John Marshall outscored the Tigers, 458-338, and Rochester Century was third with 310 1/2 points.

"We are very excited about the runner-up finish," said Farmington coach Jen Marshall, who was named the section Coach of the Year. "The girls had outstanding performances in Thursday's prelims and came back stronger in Saturday's finals to move up to second place."

Freshman Kaitlyn O'Reilly is going back to state in four events after winning section titles and breaking school records in both the 200 individual medley (2:10.09) and the 100 backstroke (58.29). She broke former Tiger standout Lindsey Ternes' record in the 200 individual medley and became the first Farmington swimmer since Ternes in 2005 to win two section championships.

O'Reilly joined Elizabeth Wolfe and sisters Caitlin and Kirsten Kracke for a school-record second-place time of 1:49.95 in the 200 medley relay, then came back to team up with the Krackes and Ellie Sundet for a third-place 1:40.78 clocking in the 200 freestyle relay. That relay also set a new school record.

Wolfe earned Farmington's final state spot in the 100 breaststroke, where she won in a time of 1:06.76. Wolfe was 17th in the event at state her sophomore year and ranks seventh among this year's qualifiers.

O'Reilly ranks seventh in the 100 backstroke and 12th in the individual medley and the medley relay and 200 free relay rank sixth and 19th, respectively.

"The girls are very focused on their swims right now. We've got some good experience heading into the meet and the goal is to qualify for finals in all five events," Marshall said. "Additionally, we have never had an All-State (top eight) relay team so that, along with Kaitlyn and Elizabeth earning All-State honors, are goals too."

The Class 2A State Meet gets under way tonight at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. The Class 2A prelims start Friday at 6 p.m. and the finals are Saturday at 6 p.m.
