Cross country: Girls win 5th-place tiebreaker at Shakopee

Farmington geared up for this week's Missota Conference Championships with an appearance at the Shakopee Invitational last Tuesday at Memorial Park.

Thanks to the finish of No. 6 runner Maricella Pacheco, the Tiger girls won the tiebreaker and the rights to fifth place in the 10-team field. Both the Tigers and Robbinsdale-Cooper finished with 159 points in a meet the host Sabers won 42-62 over runner-up Holy Family Catholic. New Prague (118), Northfield (120), Chanhassen (170), Richfield (197), St. Francis (208) and St. Paul Central (224) also competed.

Two Farmington runners cracked the top 15 in the 64-runner field. Sophomore Maricia Pacheco reached the finish line of the 4,000-meter course in 16 minutes, 16 seconds to take 12th and junior teammate Maria Kiminski was five seconds back in 14th place.

A trio of freshmen rounded out the team's counting scores. Sofia Chadwick placed 32nd in 17 minutes, Alexis Johnson came in 45th in 17:33 and Sarah Cummings finished 46th in 17:41.

Maricella Pacheco, an eighth-grader, came in 49th in 18:02, 34 seconds ahead of Robbinsdale-Cooper's No. 6 runner.

"They have all settled into being consistent varsity runners," Farmington coach Heidi Revels said. "It's exciting to watch their confidence grow and their excitement when they finish in the times they are working for."

The Tigers continued to run as a pack in the boys portion of the meet, but their pack was further back than they would have liked. The Tigers finished 10th out of 11 teams with 218 points.

Forest Lake beat St. Paul Central 59-91 for the team title. Missota Conference teams Northfield, New Prague, Shakopee and Chanhassen finished third, fourth, fifth and ninth, respectively.

Junior Jordan Lugowski returned to the front of the pack, placing 13th in a time of 17:58 on the 5,000-meter course.

The rest of the Orange and Black pack came in almost a minute later, led by sophomore Jake Rudeen's 46th-place time of 18:46. Sophomore Sean Doherty emerged to serve as the team's No. 3 runner and finish 52nd in 18:59, Patrick Sunderman was right behind in 53rd with a time of 19:02.1 and Dan Block rounded out the top five with a 54th-place 19:02.2 clocking.

Tyler Lerbakken (56th, 19:08) and Tanner Grubb (58th, 19:10) also competed.

The Tigers were in action at the Missota Conference Championships Tuesday at New Prague Golf Course. They close out the season next Thursday at the Section 1AA Championships at Brooketree Golf Course in Owatonna.
