Farmington tennis sweeps Faribault, 7-0

No. 1 singles player Blake Olmscheid improved to 2-2 with a victory against Faribault on Monday.

The fourth time was the charm for the Farmington tennis team in its series of early-season matches against non-conference foes.

After opening the season with competitive losses to Lakeville South, Simley and Park of Cottage Grove, the Tigers got in the win column with a 7-0 sweep of Faribault on a windy, sometimes rainy afternoon Monday at the Boeckman Middle School courts.

"It was a tough day weather-wise, but we played solid tennis," veteran head coach Jack Olwell said.

No. 1 singles player Blake Olmscheid used strong approach shots to improve to 2-2 on the season with a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Ben Cline added his second straight win at No. 2 singles with a dominating 6-1, 6-0 effort and Ivan Rodriguez and Benett Lagro each improved to 3-1 with victories at No. 3 and 4 singles.

In doubles play, Tyler Olson and Jeff Zakoski overcame a tough second set to secure a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 triumph at the No. 1 spot. Austin Tremmel and Trent Kortenbusch cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles and Austin Rau and Jon Zakoski completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 3 doubles.

The Tigers opened Missota Conference play Tuesday at Red Wing and are back home tonight against Chanhassen.
