Boys tennis: Cline, Rodriguez, No. 3 doubles win vs. Minnehaha

A couple of late leads slipped away and left the Farmington boys tennis team on the losing end of a 4-3 decision against Minnehaha Academy Monday afternoon at Boeckman Middle School.

Two of the Tigers' wins came in singles play. Ben Cline moved his record above .500 with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph at No. 2 singles and Ivan Rodriguez rallied for a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-8 win at No. 3 singles.

"He saved two match points in the second set before forcing a tiebreaker to save the second set," Farmington coach Jack Olwell said of Rodriguez. "Ivan then was relentless in the super tiebreaker, getting an early lead and holding it."

The breaks went Minnehaha Academy's way in the other two singles matches. Blake Olmscheid lost 5-2 leads in both sets in a 6-7 (4), 6-2, 7-10 loss at No. 1 singles and Bennett Lagro was up 5-4 in the second set of a 2-6, 5-7 setback.

The Tigers' lone doubles win came at No. 3 where Austin Rau and Jon Zakoski held on for a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 victory.

"I thought we had this one in the bank when we were up a set and 4-1 and completely dominating," Olwell said. "Tennis is a game of swings and the second set just got away from us but we came back and took the super breaker in convincing fashion. I thought Jon and Austin were at the top of their game today."

Tyler Olson and Jeff Zakoski fell 2-6, 2-6 at No. 1 doubles and Austin Tremmel and Trent Kortenbusch lost 0-1, 1-6 at No. 2 doubles.

The Tigers traveled to Richfield to take on Holy Angels Tuesday and are back at Boeckman Middle School this afternoon against Northfield.
