Baseball: Mayo holds Tigers scoreless in section tournament

Fourth-seeded Rochester Mayo needed just five innings to knock ninth-seeded Farmington out of the Section 1AAA tournament with a 10-0 blanking Monday afternoon in Rochester.

The Spartans (14-7) scored six runs on seven hits, including three extra-base hits, over the first two-plus innings against Farmington starter JD Hinks. Relief pitcher Drew Hegseth was touched up for three more doubles as he allowed four runs (two earned) the final 2 1/3. The Farmington defense finished with four errors.

The Tigers (7-13) managed just one hit, a double by senior John Stibal.

"They hit, we didn't. They made the plays, we didn't. Not taking anything away from them, they were by far the best hitting team we've faced," Farmington coach Mike Winters said.
