Volleyball: Farmington falls to JM in five games

Rochester John Marshall had to work to hand the Farmington volleyball team its first setback of the young season last Thursday night.

The Rockets trailed in games 1-0 and 2-1 before rallying for a hard-fought 26-28, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 15-10 non-conference win over the Tigers at Tiger Gym. Coach Mike Woody's squad opened the season with 3-0 sweeps of Austin and Irondale.

The home team put up some big numbers in the five-game thriller. Emma Fahning led the team with a season-high 38 digs and joined Ruthie Schmitt as the team leader with 11 kills. Fahning also had 25 serve receptions and Schmitt contributed 18 digs and 18 set assists. Mia Johnston led the team with 21 assists and Emily Nelson had 15 digs and nine kills.

Rachel Eckert led the team in serve receptions with 45 and added 28 digs.

Kaylene Seurer chipped in at the net with nine solo blocks and Kelsey Lindell added five.

The Tigers had less trouble with Irondale in last Tuesday's home opener as they rolled to a 25-15, 25-10, 25-8 sweep.

Eckert led the team with 13 serve receptions and nine digs.

Johnston and Schmitt split setting duties and finished with 13 and 11 assists, respectively. They set up Emma Fahning for a team-high seven kills in the brief match.

The Tigers traveled to Lakeville South Tuesday before opening the Missota Conference season tonight at Northfield. This weekend, the team travels to Coon Rapids for a tournament.
