Volleyball: Tiger's season ends at Mayo

The Farmington volleyball team fell short in a marathon 29-27 opening set and couldn't recover in a sweep at the hands of Rochester Mayo in the second round of the Section 1AAA tournament last Friday in Rochester.

The third-seeded Spartans (16-11) advanced to face Faribault in the semifinals by winning the last two sets, 25-20 and 25-10.

The Tigers closed out the season with a record of 14-15, a seven-win improvement from last season and the most wins since the team went 20-12 in 2009. Eight seniors led this year's team: Rachel Eckert, Emily Nelson, Kelsey Lindell, Elissa Baago, Kayla Collins, Mia Johnston, Courtney Johnston and Kaylene Seurer.

Nelson led the team with five kills against Mayo. Lexi Wenskaug had four and four other players contributed three.

Ruthanne Schmitt put up a team-high 11 assists and Mia Johnston added seven. Schmitt also paced the defense with six digs, while Eckert, Johnston and Emma Fahning each added five.

Eckert led the team with 21 serve receptions and Fahning chipped in 18.

The Tigers opened Section 1AAA play with a 25-15, 25-13, 25-17 sweep of 11th-seeded Red Wing last Tuesday at Tiger Gym.

Nelson led a balanced attack with eight kills, Fahning had seven and Seurer six. Mia Johnston set up 15 of those with assists.

Eckert led the defense with 17 serve receptions and 10 digs and Makenzie Hesse and Fahning each supplied six digs. Hesse also provided a spark at the service line with five of the team's 10 aces.
