Farmington will thank its veterans with concert, breakfast

Veterans Day is a day for honoring the men and women who have served their country by enlisting in the United States military. And Farmington plans to do just that this Veterans Day.

Veterans Day is Sunday, Nov. 11, but this year, it is also observed on Monday, Nov. 12.

On Saturday, the Farmington High School Wind Ensemble will host the 451st Army Band for a free Veterans Day concert, "Salute to Veterans: Telling Their Story." The concert will begin at the 6:30 p.m., in the recital hall at FHS.

The concert will open with the FHS Wind Ensemble performing a few numbers. The 451st Army Band, based out of Fort Snelling, will perform afterward. This marks the fourth year the 451st has provided a free concert for the Farmington community, and FHS band director Jeff Gottwig is pleased to welcome the group back.

"We hope you will take advantage of this great opportunity to hear these two fine groups in concert in our wonderful recital hall," he said. "Hope to see you there, and bring a veteran."

On Monday, the Farmington American Legion Clifford Larson Post 189 and Farmington Veterans of Foreign Wars Sypal-Lundgren Post 7662 will host their annual Veterans Day breakfast at Tailgaters. The breakfast begins at 9 a.m. and goes until 11 a.m., with a short program planned at 10 a.m. The program will feature speaker Mike Labovich, the former Dakota County Veterans Service Officer. Mayor Todd Larson will also speak during the event.

A free breakfast is offered to any of the area's veterans, and a nominal fee will be asked of their guests.
