Swimming & diving: Tigers stay unbeaten

Farmington's Sara Kintner swims to first place in the 200 freestyle during last Thursday's conference win over New Prague and Holy Angels at Dodge Middle School.

Nothing seems to to slow down the Farmington girls swimming and diving team — not even exhaustion.

Swimming in their fifth meet in 10 days, the Tigers remained undefeated on the season as they captured their fourth straight championship Saturday at the annual Eagle Invitational at the Oak Grove Junior High pool in Bloomington. The team also won the Missota Conference Relay meet and the Maroon Division at the Maroon and Gold Invitational and has a 4-0 record in dual meets.

Farmington won seven of the meet's 12 events Saturday and finished 1-2-3 in two of them while outscoring runner-up Bloomington Jefferson, 811-601. Red Wing (399), Eau Claire North (307) and host Kennedy (170) rounded out the five-team field.

It took a meet-record time by Bloomington Jefferson to nip Farmington's foursome of Kirsten Kracke, Kaitlyn O'Reilly, Chelsea Gehrke and Catherine Gehrke by less than a second in the meet-opening 200 medley relay. The Tigers responded with a 1-2-3 finish by Cora Ruzicka, Catherine Gehrke and Ellie Sundet in the 200 freestyle.

O'Reilly and Chelsea Gehrke followed with a 1-2 finish in the 200 individual medley and Kracke earned 20 points with a first-place effort in the 50 freestyle. Kracke later added a winning swim in the 100 freestyle and joined Sundet, O'Reilly and Chelsea Gehrke for a first-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay.

O'Reilly grabbed her third gold in the 100 breaststroke and Ruzicka picked up another first-place finish in the 500 freestyle where teammates Sara Kintner and Catherine Gehrke followed in second and third, respectively.

Other second-place finishes were turned in by Kendall Novak in the 1-meter dive, Chelsea Gehrke in the 100 butterfly, Emily Ley in the 100 backstroke and the 400 freestyle foursome of Ley, Sundet, Ruzicka and Catherine Gehrke.

The Tigers hosted Minneapolis Southwest on Tuesday and continue their busy schedule tonight against Chaska at Chaska Middle School East.
