Tennis: Tigers falls to Huskies in quarterfinals
The Farmington girls tennis team received the No. 6 seed – its highest seed ever – in the Section 1AA tournament and won one match before falling to Owatonna 5-2 in the quarterfinals last Thursday.
The Tigers opened tournament play by defeating Red Wing 4-3 last Tuesday at Boeckman Middle School. Singles victories were provided by No. 2 player Callie Olmscheid and No. 3 player Ellie Moser. Brooke Hapuku dropped her third-set tiebreaker 10-7 at No. 1 singles.
Beth Fairchild and Jess Novotny came from behind to win what coach Jack Olwell called “the match of the day” at No. 1 doubles, winning 6-3, 7-6(3). Molly Rudorfer and Lindsey Fairchild added a win of their own at No. 2 doubles.
Rudorfer and Fairchild provided the Tigers’ lone doubles win two days later at Owatonna by a score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. Hapuku played some of her best tennis of the season to come from behind for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 1 singles.
The Tigers begin play in the individual Section 1AA tournament this week.
