Boys' soccer: Tigers start season strong

The Tigers started their season against the same team that ended their 2016 season.

Farmington lost to Owatonna in the section finals last year but were able to exact some measure of revenge against them with a 1-1 tie.

Owatonna scored first, about halfway through the first half off of a rebound. In the second half, senior captain Corey McKnight was fouled in the box and Farmington received a penalty kick. Fellow senior captain Cristian Collazo took the kick but failed to convert due to a great save by the Owatonna goalkeeper. With under a minute left in regulation, McKnight scored on a rebounded save after junior Roberto Alvarez Llordachs launched a long shot from 30 yards out. Neither side was able to get the go-ahead goal in overtime and the game ended 1-1.

Farmington blew out Rochester Century on the road 5-1. They took control in the first half by building a 2-0 lead with two goals from junior Jonas Mellang and sophomore Johnathan Gideon, both of which were their first varsity goals. In the second half the Tigers came out hot again and expanded the lead to 4-0 off another goal from Mellang and the first varsity goal for junior captain Cole Eckert. Junior Caleb Rollag also added his own first varsity goal to make the score 5-1.

The Tigers kept up their torrid scoring during their 6-0 win over New Prague on Monday, Aug. 28. They hosted and shutout New Prague 6-0, and Mellang continued his scoring burst by adding three more goals to make five on the season. Farmington also got goals from Gideon, McKnight and Rollag.

Farmington traveled to Rochester John Marshall Tuesday, Aug. 29, go to Richfield on Thursday, Aug. 31, and host Park of Cottage Grove on Friday.
