Farmington tennis finishes off 5-10 season

The Farmington girls tennis team wrapped up its turn-around season with a pair of closely-contested conference losses last week.

The Tigers fell 4-3 to Holy Angels in their home finale last Tuesday at Boeckman Middle School and lost 5-2 to Shakopee Thursday to finish with a 1-6 record in the Missota.

Ryan Jara and Molly Rudorfer picked up singles wins against Holy Angels and Beth Fairchild and Jess Novotny teamed up for a win at No. 2 doubles.

Jara closed out the season with the team's lone victory against Shakopee, raising her record to 11-6. Callie Olmschied finished with the team's top record at 12-5.

Along with picking up that first conference win in several years, the team finished with five total victories, their highest total in some time, and won the Mound Tournament and their match against Red Wing each for the first time in at least a decade.

"We had good team chemistry and wonderful senior leadership. Our season was marked by a wave of talented newcomers. Our kiddie corps played with veteran poise and kept us in every match," Farmington coach Jack Olwell said. "Maybe most impressive was the individual growth of the players. They matured with each match and now have set the bar pretty high for themselves next year."

The Tigers open up the section team tournament this week and continue with the section individual tournament next week.
