Farmington golfers 6th at Missota meets
The Farmington boys golf team turned in consistent scores to finish sixth in a pair of Missota Conference meets played back to back last week. Their scores were similar at each of the meets, but their coach's perception of his team's play varied from one meet to the next.
Farmington shot a 330 May 14 at its home course, Fountain Valley, and followed it up with a 329 the next day at Stonebrooke.
Coach Jon Holmes called the Fountain Valley performance "so so," but seemed more optimistic about his team's performance at Stonebrooke. He said the team has made steady progress in this weather-shortened season.
"If we can keep limiting the bad holes to bogeys and even doubles we would improve our team score quite a bit," Holmes said after the Stonebrooke meet. "That coupled with hitting the four footers will catapult our scores in a hurry."
The Tigers' leading scorer at Fountain Valley wasn't actually on the varsity. Darby Grengs shot a 77 for the JV team. That would have put him in the top eight overall if he'd been playing varsity.
As it was, Garrett Heidelberger led the Tiger varsity with an 81 at Fountain Valley. Erik Holmstrom, Grant Hauswirth and Jake Jensen shot 83s, Jake Tripel had an 86 and Nate Anderson had a 91.
Holmstrom was the top Tiger scorer at Stonebrooke with a 75. Jensen and Hauswirth shot 84s, Grengs moved up to the varsity and shot an 86, Anderson shot a 90 and Trippel turned in a 93.
Chanhassen won both of the conference meets.
