Girls swimming and diving: Tigers second in final Missota meet

Farmington moved up one spot from a season ago and closed the gap on sixth-ranked (Class 2A) Chanhassen at Saturday’s Missota Conference Championships.

The Tigers used a slew of runner-up finishes to place second in the team race in their final league meet with 423 points, 53 off the pace of the Storm. Chaska was a distant third with 352 points in the eight-team field at the Shakopee West Junior High pool.

“We had a fabulous conference meet and it makes me very excited for sections and state. Going into the meet Chanhassen was 120 points ahead of us and we were able to make 70 of those up,” Farmington coach Jen Marshall said. “We were gunning to take the title, but we had a good run at them and I’m proud of how we performed.”

The Tigers didn’t crown any conference champions, but took runner-up honors in six events. The foursome of Kirsten Kracke, Kaitlyn O’Reilly, Chelsea Gehrke and Cora Ruzicka started the meet by placing second in the 200 medley relay and came back to grab a silver medal in the 200 freestyle relay.

Each of those swimmers added one individual second-place finish, starting with Ruzicka in the 200 freestyle. O’Reilly followed by placing second in the 200 individual medley, and Gehrke and Kracke followed by earning runner-up honors in the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle, respectively.

O’Reilly closed out the meet with a third-place effort in the 100 breaststroke and Kracke tacked on third in the 50 freestyle.

Catherine Gehrke, Hannah Seitzinger, Ellie Sundet and Emily Ley closed out the meet by earning the Tigers fourth in the 400 freestyle relay. Ruzicka matched the finish in the 500 freestyle.

Fifth-place efforts were turned in by Sundet in the 200 freestyle, Chelsea Gehrke in the 200 individual medley and Lexie Bray in the 100 backstroke.

The Tigers continue championship season next Thursday when they travel to the Rochester Recreation Center for the Section 1AA prelims. The finals will be back in Rochester on Saturday afternoon.
