Swimming and diving: O’Reilly leads Tigers in final meet

Farmington senior Kaitlyn O’Reilly won all-state honors in three events at last Wednesday’s Class 2A state meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.

Senior Kaitlyn O’Reilly closed out her decorated swimming career by leading Farmington to its highest-ever finish last week at the Class 2A state meet.

O’Reilly was part of three all-state performances during last Wednesday’s finals at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center as the Tigers placed 12th out of 36 scoring teams with 60 points. The program’s previous best finish came when it scored 72 points and placed 13th in 2011.

O’Reilly has been a part of the Tigers’ state meet contingent the last five years. A 19-time state qualifier, she closes out her career having earned all-state honors nine times.

“Kaitlyn has been a very driven, hard-working athlete since the day she stepped on deck five years ago. She has tremendous talent but, more important, she knows she has to work hard to foster that talent,” Farmington coach Jen Marshall said. “She is, by far, the most decorated Lady Tiger in program history and she has left her mark.”

O’Reilly opened last Wednesday’s finals by joining Kirsten Kracke, Chelsea Gehrke and Cora Ruzicka for a 12th-place time of 1 minute, 49.65 seconds in the 200 medley relay. She came back an event later and placed seventh in the 200 individual medley finals with a 2:07.28 clocking.

The same foursome of relay swimmers came back later in the meet to place seventh in the 200 freestyle relay. The relay set a new school record in the prelims and came back to break it again in the finals with a time of 1:38.10.

“The 200 free relay is our second all-state relay in program history, which we’re very excited about,” Marshall said.

O’Reilly then closed out her career with an eighth-place swim in the 100 backstroke finals.

Kracke added a 14th-place finish in the 50 freestyle where her prelim time of 24.38 seconds set a new personal best. She also placed 21st in the 100 freestyle in 54.35.

Gehrke added an 18th-place finish in the 100 butterfly in her first state meet.
