Boys hockey: Tigers win big in Inver Grove

The Farmington boys hockey team must have been good last year, because they found three big wins in their stocking when they traveled to Inver Grove Heights last weekend for a Christmas tournament.

The Tigers got wins over Simley, Cambridge-Isanti and Albert Lea in the weekend tournament, and none of the final margins was closer than three goals.

The weekend’s first game was the closest. It was also the only time the Tigers trailed in the three games. Simley got on the board in the first period Dec. 26, but John Siebenaler answered with assists from Jack Erickson and Benton Olson. After Simley took the lead back at the end of the period, Farmington opened the second with goals from Jake Trippel (from Alex Aubrecht) and Grady Hauswirth (from Tanner Grubb).

Simley got one more goal in the second, but Erik Holmstrom (from Hauswirth), Justin Novak and Grubb scored in the third to put things away.

Gage Overby faced just 15 shots in the game while Farmington put 30 shots on the Simley net.

Farmington scored early and often Friday against Cambridge-Isanti. Trippel opened the scoring at 6:49 of the first period with assists from Chris Fitzgibbons and Landon Nielsen. Siebenaler scored less than a minute later (from Novak and Austin Martinson) and, after a Cambridge goal, Novak (from Martinsen and Aubrecht) and Jack Erickson (from Holmstrom) added goals.

Holmstrom and Martinsen scored goals in the second period, and Trippel scored two in the third to complete the hat trick.

Farmington had 44 shots in the game.

The Tigers scored four times in the first period of Saturday’s game against Albert Lea. The goals came from Siebenaler, Novak, Hauswirth and Grubb. Fitzgibbons added a goal in the second, and Nielsen scored twice in the third.

Nick Schonning faced just nine shots in the game while the Tigers put 51 on the Albert Lea net.
