Wrestling: Upset bid falls short at No. 5 Anoka

Bonus points cost the Farmington wrestling team in its upset bid against fifth-ranked Anoka Friday night.

Each team won seven of the dual’s 14 matches, but three of Anoka’s came by pin and three more came by major decision in a 33-29 nail-biter over the Tigers.

“We had a hard-fought match, but came up a little short,” Farmington coach Chad Olson said. “It was a great reminder for us heading into next weekend at team sections.”

Joe Hoeve and Jamin LeDuc each won matches via pin for the Tigers. Taylor Venz and Matt Rustad scored major decisions and Brayden Chapman, John Walz and Godfrey Mpetey each won decisions.

A day earlier, the Tigers swept a triangular at Stillwater, defeating Stillwater 39-25 and Central 64-6.

Victor Gliva, Joe Liden, Kyle Benjamin, LeDuc, Chapman, Walz, Hoeve and Mpetey each went 2-0.

The Tiger wrestlers open the Section 1AAA team tournament at home tonight against Rochester John Marshall.
