Farmington girls track and field: Ferm, three relays head to state

Farmington’s Alicia Hett leads the pack during the 800 at the Section 1AA  Championships.

The Farmington girls track team qualified a school-record three relays for the state meet while placing third as a team at Saturday’s Section 1AA Championships.

The Tigers placed second in the 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 relays and crowned Izzie Ferm as an individual champion in the triple jump while scoring 73 points at Lakeville South. The hosts put up 151 points and Lakeville North was a distant second with 79 points.

“The ladies performed very well and I am extremely proud of them. Going into the meet I thought we could be in the top four in our section,” Farmington coach Tom Hart said. “Lakeville South is probably the best team in the state, but I liked our chances against the rest of the section.”

The meet started out well with Sofia Chadwick, Lauren Peterson, Morgan Mach and Alicia Hett qualifying for state in the 4x800 relay. The foursome clocked in at a season-best time of 9 minutes, 39.20 seconds to advance to this weekend’s state meet at Hamline University in St. Paul.

“Once the race began we could see the ladies were on a mission to compete and that they did, finishing second,” Hart said. “It was an awesome way to begin the day.”

The other relays followed suit. Ferm, Emma Record, Jennifer Miller and Megan Graham placed a close second behind South in the 4x200 and Ferm, Miller, Graham and Hett closed out the meet by running a season-best time of 3:59.03 in the 4x400.

Ferm will compete as the Tigers’ lone individual qualifier at Hamline after winning the triple jump with a leap of 36-4. The next closest athlete to an individual state berth was Record in the 200 finals where she placed third in 26.78.

Fourth-place finishes came from Kendall Novak in the pole vault (personal best of 10 feet), Morgan Cecchettini in the 100 (personal-best 13.10) and Peterson in the 3,200. Placing sixth were Destiny Schmitz in the high jump (personal-best 5-1), Hett in the 800 (personal-best 2:21.47), Maricia Pacheco (personal-best 5:26.00) and Record in the 100.
