Tiger wrestling tops the Irish

The Farmington and Rosemount wrestling teams both had plenty of action this past week. The two teams met in a co-meet on Thursday, Jan. 18. Farmington wrestled later that night against top-ranked in class 3A Apple Valley, while Rosemount competed at the Eastview Invitational over the weekend.

Tigers vs. Irish

The Tigers and Irish faced off in the first dual of the co-meet held at Farmington High School. Farmington won the dual 44-28 as the Tigers won seven out of 11 wrestled matches. Below are the results:

Golden Eagles

Farmington then struggled against arguably the best team in the state (though watch out for Anoka). The Tigers won just three matches against Apple Valley: Stewart at 120 pounds won by a 5-1 decision over Cade Sungaard; Trayton Anderson at 126 pounds tech falled Max Harvey 19-2 and Janz at 152 pounds won a 9-7 decision over Kyrylo Pernatiy. Of Apple Valley's 10 wins (not including a forfeit they received), six were by pin.

Coach Henry Gerten said that overall he was happy with the way his team wrestled.

"We wrestled very hard and continue to see improvement in our lower weights," he said. "We need to pick the pace up a bit in out upper weights and we look forward to getting healthy as the season reaches it's latter stages."

Farmington hosts Eastview on Thursday, Jan. 25, and then travels to Albert Lea on Saturday, Jan. 27.

Rosemount at Eastview

The Irish then competed at the Eastview Invitational this past weekend, an individual tournament featuring 11 teams. Last year, Rosemount finished in 10th but his year they were able to improve their performance drastically and take fifth.

Coach Tyler Cookas said that the Irish had eight wrestlers place. Artur Un, Ezayah Oropeza and Max Otterdah all finished as runners-up; Cassius Howard and Zach Young each took fifth; and Vince McCorkell, Tony Beyersdorfer and Haydyn Rehder placed sixth. Also winning matches were Johnny Thai and Kirby Kayfes.

Rosemount hosts Rochester Century and Wayzata in a triangular on Friday, Jan. 27, and then the next day hosts Shakopee, Burnsville and Roseville.
