RED WING, Minn. - State Republican Party officials launched the opening salvo Wednesday in what they say will be an aggressive effort to take back legislative seats. It began with Sen. Steve Murphy, a lawmaker who is "out of touch" with his district, said Minnesota Republican Party Deputy Chairman Michael Brodkorb. "Sen.
RED WING, Minn. -- Steve Sviggum's gubernatorial campaign is on indefinite hold. The Department of Labor and Industry commissioner said Wednesday that a U.S. Office of Special Counsel decision handed down last week prohibits him from seeking the Republican endorsement for governor. "I have a hole in my stomach the size of Lake Mille Lacs," the former House speaker said in an interview with the Republican Eagle. The ruling bars Sviggum from campaigning for political office.
Stark differences punctuate the race between U.S. Rep. John Kline and Steve Sarvi in Minnesota's 2nd Congressional District. A shared background in military service is one of few similarities between the candidates: Kline, a Republican anti-earmark crusader, and his challenger Sarvi, a Democrat who says state and local projects deserve special consideration at the federal level. Sarvi said that includes transportation projects, including the Hastings bridge, which underwent improvements last summer.
The agony of murder cuts deep. That was the message shared Monday by two families on polar opposite ends of a Red Wing homicide. "The murder has been overwhelming to the victim's family," Goodhue County Attorney Stephen Betcher told the court. "They have lost trust and peace of mind over this tragedy." Luis Orlando Galicia Mijangos was shot to death Jan. 20 by Marvin Todd Griffith in an alley about two blocks from Goodhue County's law enforcement and justice nerve centers.
Brent Anderson says it's not uncommon for some Frontenac State Park visitors to arrive at the gate looking a bit perplexed. Heading south through Red Wing and Wacouta, they wonder just where the Mississippi River snuck off to. The park's entrance also provides no hint of the river, further confusing visitors lured by stories of its breathtaking views of Lake Pepin. Anderson, the park's assistant manager, understands.
LAKE CITY, Minn. -- It costs about $15 to pitch a tent at Hok-Si-La park. At that rate, Steve Prigge figures he's gotten his money's worth, considering the park's stunning campsite views of Lake Pepin. For 34 years, the Winona man and a group of relatives and friends have congregated at the same campsite each Memorial Day weekend. "We used to call it our million-dollar site," Prigge said.
So much for the welcome wagon. A family in Cannon Falls Township in Goodhue County got an alarming housewarming gift Sunday when they found a live grenade while moving into their new house. Kari and Jason Erickson were clearing out items left behind by the previous resident which included a desk. As they began moving the piece from the dining room, they heard something rolling around inside. They opened the desk and recognized immediately what they were looking at. Still, they kept their hopes up. "At first, we thought, 'That's not a live grenade,'" Kari said Monday.
Years of alleged sexual abuse could land a Goodhue man in prison for decades. Authorities on Friday charged John Jeremy Hahn, 19, with five counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. During interviews with investigators, Hahn allegedly admitted to sexually abusing two girls for a period of up to five years. He was being held Friday in Goodhue County Jail on $75,000 bail. The allegations surfaced after a girl told her youth group pastor about the alleged abuse. Hahn was arrested Thursday by Rochester police and taken to Red Wing for questioning by Goodhue County authorities.

All four made brief court appearances Wednesday. They included the latest suspect, 19-year-old Samantha Mary-Helen Siples of Red Wing.
