ST. PAUL — The Commission on Judicial Selection announced today it is recommending three candidates to Gov. Mark Dayton for consideration to fill the current vacancy in Minnesota's First Judicial District. This vacancy will occur upon the retirement of the Honorable Michael A. Fahey, and will be chambered at Hastings in Dakota County.
Farmington High School administrators over the weekend received word of a potential threat directed at school. They worked with Farmington Police Department to determine the source.
Minn. woman, 19, dies in skiing accident after striking tree WABASHA, Minn.—A 19-year-old Minnesota woman is dead following an accident at a ski resort in southeastern Minnesota Saturday, Jan. 20, according to KTTC-TV. Bethany Becker, of Corcoran, Minn., hit a tree after failing to make a turn toward the bottom of a ski slope at Coffee Mill Ski Area in Wabasha, according to police. An ambulance crew arrived on scene and transported Becker to Mayo Clinic-Saint Marys and met the Mayo One helicopter at Plainview along the way.
A new year brought a few changes to how residents can recycle certain items. Dakota County no longer accepts plastic bags and packing peanuts at The Recycling Zone in Eagan. As of Jan. 1, the county also has stopped paying residents to drop off aluminum cans, though cans still are accepted for free recycling. Plastic bags and wrap require special recycling and do not belong in household recycling carts. Bags can wrap around recycling sorting equipment. Many private businesses offer the same service, so it is no longer needed at The Recycling Zone.
Ellsworth Community School District has announced school will be closed Monday, Jan. 22 due to a predicted a snowstorm. The Ellsworth Elementary Open House, scheduled for Monday night, Jan. 22 has been postponed. A new date will be announced. Other area schools who have cancelled school, as of 8 p.m. Sunday night, include Hastings, Goodhue and Red Wing.
Dog walker finds snowmobiler dead 30 miles north of Minneapolis EAST BETHEL, Minn. - A dog walker spotted the remains Thursday, Jan. 18 of an East Bethel, Minn. man apparently killed in a snowmobile crash, investigators said. East Bethel is approximately 30 miles north of Minneapolis. The body had been there at least overnight, according to the Anoka County sheriff's office.

Allina Health announces restricted visitor guidelines for all hospitals Starting this month, Allina Health will implement restricted visitor guidelines to protect patients and staff due to influenza. The guidelines are: • Children under the age of 5 are asked not to visit patients. • Visitors to Mom Baby/Birth Center units may be screened for wellness and children under 5 will be screened for wellness before visiting. • Visitors who are sick should refrain from visiting patients in the hospital.
