A late-season antlerless only deer hunt proposed for three southeastern Minnesota permit areas with deer populations significantly above goal levels will not be conducted in January 2018. Public input collected at two meetings and online showed no clear consensus either for or against the hunt, said Paul Telander, wildlife section chief for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

"There were more opioid-related deaths last year than the year before,' state Attorney General Lori Swanson said. APPLE VALLEY, Minn.—The oldest snow monkey in North America died Sunday at the Minnesota Zoo in Apple Valley. Nikko, a Japanese macaque (commonly referred to as snow monkeys), celebrated his 34th birthday in September, according to a news release issued Monday by zoo officials. Nikko nearly doubled the average life expectancy of his species, which is 18 years, the news release said. He arrived at the zoo in 2001.

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Supreme Court will not hear a Minnesota case challenging a state law that allows sex offenders to remain locked up indefinitely. The court announced Monday, Oct. 2, that it will not take up the case. In not hearing it, the court allows an early 2017 ruling by a federal appeals court to stand. The appeals decision overturned a lower court decision that found the sex offender program unconstitutional. The appeals ruling removed requirements for immediate changes.

Joshua and Evan Christensen of Farmington are young, published authors. They're funny, too. The Christensens, ages 10 and 8, submitted jokes for new joke books sponsored by the UnitedHealthcare Children's Foundation, which publishes the books to raise money to help families pay for children's uncovered medical expenses. The Christensens' jokes were selected from nominations that came in from around the country.
