Aldi eyes Farmington store

Aldi grocery store may build a new storefront at Vermillion River Crossings commercial development in Farmington.

Farmington Mayor Todd Larson said Aldi grocery chain is looking to buy land and build a new storefront location in Vermillion River Crossings located off Highway 50.

This commercial development deal has been in the works for a while, Larson said. Developers have been working with city staff to build in the open commercial land that has been for sale for years.

Currently, Vermillion River Crossings is home to a family health clinic, a fast food chain and a senior housing apartment complex.

"They plan to build in between the senior high rise and McDonald's," Larson said.

If plans are approved, the Aldi grocery store may be located south of McDonald's restaurant and north of Vermillion River Crossings Apartments, the 66-unit senior apartments run by Dakota County Community Development Agency.

The German-owned Aldi discount grocery store chain has been building grocery stores across the Twin Cities. The company owns more than 10,000 store locations across the globe with stores in 18 countries.

Aldi grocery store has been open in Rosemount for years and it opened a large store in Apple Valley in the past year.

The Farmington Planning Commission will review tentative PUD (Planned Unit Development) documents at the next meeting, Tuesday, Sept. 12, Larson said.

If Aldi opens, Farmington would offer residents a second grocery store, after the long-standing Family Fresh in downtown Farmington. Also, the Iowa-based Hy-Vee grocery chain plans to build in Vermillion River Crossings in the near future.

Larson said the city is excited to see plans for the new Aldi and to be able to offer current and future residents grocery shopping choices.

Another commercial development is on the horizon for the city and it may be ready to announce in the next month, adding another commercial business in the Vermillion River Crossings development area, Larson said.
