Russell Helmer Larson

Passed away Jan. 21, 2019. Born April 28, 1930 in Tower, MN, Russell was the only child of Helmer and Jean (Makela) Larson. Russell's mother died when he was 3; he was raised jointly by his father, aunt & uncle, and grandma. He graduated from Tower-Soudan High School in 1948 and soon after joined the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Aldebaran. Returning to school, Russell graduated from University of Minnesota, Duluth, with a degree in accounting. He was employed by Oliver Iron Mining Company, a division of U.S. Steel, for ten years and started work at St. Louis County Social Services, Duluth, in 1964. He retired in 1992 as chief financial officer, Social Services. Russell married Frances Zakrajsek on July 9, 1955. They lived in Duluth for 46 years, moving to Farmington, MN, in 2001. He and Frances were active square dancers and officers of the Seaway Swingers and Harbor Squares of Duluth for 27 years. Russell enjoyed many years at his lake home in Makinen, MN, and winters in Arizona. He was a member of St. Michael's Church in Farmington. Survived by wife, Frances, son, David Russell (and Melody) Larson, grandchildren Chelsea and Andrew Larson, sister-in-law & brother-in-law, Denne' M. and Ronald Elioff of San Jose, CA.
