FHS girls' swim team starts season with a bang
The Farmington girls' swimming and diving team started its season off on the right foot with a win at Hastings on Aug. 24. Both teams won six events each but the Lady Tigers were able to collect enough points to edge out the Raiders.
Head coach Jen Marshall said that her team came into the season having continued to improve over the off-season.
"We had a great first meet as many girls are as fast or faster in the water than where they finished last year," she said. "This is very exciting for the remainder of the season."
Farmington swimmers who won their events were: the 200 medley relay team of Catherine Gehrke, Rory Kent, Lexie Bray and Mari Dougherty in 1 minute 56.61 seconds; the 200 freestyle relay team of Bray, Catherine Gehrke, Anna Urbach and Anna Singewald (1:48.44); Urbach in the 200 freestyle (2:08.5); Kent in the 200 IM (2:20.22) and 100 breaststroke (1:15.47); and Dougherty in the 50 freestyle (26.17).
What really helped the Tigers was their ability to collect points off of lower finishes. Taking second were: Bray in the 50 (26.43) and 100 freestyle (57.37); Chloe Gehrke in the 100 butterfly (1:05.95); Urbach in the 500 freestyle (5:56.06); Dougherty in the 100 backstroke (1:04.00); and Rachel Lentsch in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.45).
Third-place finishers were: The 200 medley relay team of Caroline Cummings, Lentsch, Chloe Gehrke and Cielo DeCastro (2:02.85); the 200 freestyle relay team of Altmann, Chloe Gehrke, Rachel Christensen and DeCastro (1:54.93); Singewald in the 200 freestyle (2:12.73); Lentsch in the 200 IM (2:28.43); Paige Gerlach in the one meter dive (160.80 points); Catherine Gehrke in the 100 freestyle (59.67); Paige Altmann in the 500 freestyle (6:06.01); and Cummings in the 100 backstroke (1:08.28).
The Tigers swam at Rochester Century on Tuesday, Aug. 29, and host Prior Lake on Thursday, Aug. 31.
